Richard E. Pratley, MD, is Professor of Medicine and director of the Diabetes and Metabolism Translational Medicine Unit at the University of Vermont College of Medicine.
Dr. Pratley received his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and he received his medical degree at Wayne State University, Detroit, both in Michigan. He completed his Medical internship and residency at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Dr. Pratley completed a Fellowship in the Division of Geriatrics at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor as well as a fellowship in the Division of Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland. He was a Medical Staff fellow at the Laboratory of Clinical Physiology/Metabolism Section at the Gerontology Research Center in the National Institute on Aging in Baltimore. He was an investigator at the NIH NIDDK Diabetes and Obesity clinical research center in Phoenix, AZ where he studied the pathogenesis and genetics of obesity and diabetes. He has extensive experience as a clinical trial leader in the development of new drugs for diabetes.
Dr. Pratley is a member of the American Diabetes Association and The Obesity Society. He regularly presents at national meetings and is a Principal Investigator for both NIH and pharmaceutical company sponsored trials in diabetes and obesity. Dr. Pratley is on the editorial boards of Diabetes Care and Current Diabetes Reports and acts as an ad hoc reviewer for many journals, including the American Journal of Cardiology and Diabetes. His original scientific work has appeared in scientific and medical journals such as Diabetes, Obesity, Diabetes Care and the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
Richard E. Pratley, MD, has received grants/research support from Eli Lilly, GlaxoSmithKline, Mannkind, Merck, Novartis, NovoNordisk, Pfizer, Roche, sanofi-aventis, and Takeda. He has served as a consultant for GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, Novartis, NovoNordisk, and Takeda. He owns stock in Novartis and has received honoraria from Merck, NovoNordisk, and Takeda.
